AMD Powers 4 of the Top 10 on the June 2026 TOP500 as China’s LineShine Takes No. 1

June 26, 2026
AMD is further solidifying its foothold in the global high-performance computing (HPC) sector. The latest TOP500 and Green500 rankings demonstrate widespread adoption of AMD EPYC processors and Instinct accelerators across leading supercomputing deployments worldwide.

Per the June 2026 TOP500 list, AMD-powered systems now total 191 units, representing an 11% year-over-year growth. The firm’s solutions account for 41% of all newly added systems in this iteration. Additionally, AMD secures four spots among the world’s top 10 fastest supercomputers and four entries in the top 10 most energy-efficient systems, highlighting the expanding influence of AMD platforms in both artificial intelligence and traditional HPC scenarios.

Strong Showing in TOP500 Rankings

AMD-equipped supercomputers continue to maintain a prominent presence among the globe’s highest-performance computing systems, despite a change in the top ranking this cycle. China’s LineShine, a 2.198 exaflop system deployed at the National Supercomputing Centre in Shenzhen, claimed the No.1 position on the June 2026 list, ending El Capitan’s long hold as the world’s fastest supercomputer. Even so, AMD-powered machines occupy three of the top six rankings: El Capitan at second place, Frontier at third, and Eni’s newly launched HPC7 at sixth.

These large-scale deployments leverage paired AMD EPYC CPUs and AMD Instinct GPUs to support large-scale scientific computation, simulation modeling, and AI workloads. The persistent high ranking of AMD-based systems in the TOP500 index reflects widespread industry demand for architectures tailored to handle increasingly complex, data-heavy applications.

Energy Efficiency Remains a Key Differentiator

The Green500 list, which evaluates supercomputer energy efficiency, has grown into a critical industry benchmark, as power consumption constraints become a core limiting factor for future HPC and AI large-scale deployments.

AMD-powered supercomputers take four places in the Green500 top 10, including Otus (No. 5), Capella (No. 6), AMD Ouranos (No. 9), and Portage (No. 10). AMD technology also underpins over half of the top 50 systems on the Green500 list, making up 56% of the total entries.

These results underscore the industry’s growing emphasis on balancing computing performance with operational energy efficiency, especially amid the continuous expansion of AI training and inference workloads.

Growing Role in European HPC and Sovereign AI Initiatives

AMD is also broadening its market presence across Europe, as regional governments, research institutions and enterprises ramp up investment in sovereign AI infrastructure and next-generation HPC systems.

Eni’s HPC7 supercomputer, ranked sixth globally, stands as one of Europe’s largest industrial HPC deployments. Built upon the company’s earlier HPC6 platform, it delivers robust support for artificial intelligence, simulation analysis and energy research workloads.

The University of Cambridge has recently unveiled two new systems equipped with AMD Instinct MI355X GPUs, marking the first TOP500-certified deployments of this accelerator model. The two systems secure the 67th and 68th positions in the latest rankings.

Hosted by CSC in Finland and operated under the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking framework, the LUMI supercomputer remains one of Europe’s flagship HPC resources. Ranking 11th worldwide, it supports a wide array of regional scientific computing and AI research projects.

In France, GENCI is pressing ahead with the development of Alice Recoque, the country’s first exascale supercomputer. The system will integrate AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Generation AMD EPYC processors, serving both traditional HPC and AI workloads as a core component of France’s national AI infrastructure strategy.

AMD Previews MI430X Accelerator

At the 2026 HPC User Forum, AMD offered an early preview of its upcoming Instinct MI430X GPU, designed for enterprises and research institutions requiring dual capabilities of AI acceleration and high-precision scientific computing.
While most AI workloads prioritize low-precision computing formats, numerous scientific research scenarios rely heavily on double-precision (FP64) computational performance. Climate simulation, computational fluid dynamics, advanced material science, aerospace structural design and fusion energy research all demand ultra-high numerical accuracy.

AMD estimates that the Instinct MI430X can deliver over 200 TFLOPS of native FP64 performance, positioning it as a flagship accelerator option for next-generation top-tier HPC systems. Once realized, this performance level will set a new industry benchmark for large-scale simulation, numerical modeling and AI-assisted scientific computing.

The latest TOP500 and Green500 data confirms that AMD’s hardware strategy — pairing high-core-count EPYC server processors with high-performance Instinct accelerators — continues to gain strong traction in both traditional supercomputing and emerging AI infrastructure deployments.
