Kioxia CD9P-R Review: Read-Intensive Gen5 Up to 61.44TB

June 22, 2026

Kioxia CD9P-R SSD Review (30% condensed, all core specs & test results preserved)

Overview

Kioxia CD9P-R is its new read-optimized PCIe 5.0 NVMe 2.0 data center SSD, the first CD-series built on 8th-gen BiCS TLC flash with in-house controller and firmware. E3.S models span 1.92TB–30.72TB; 2.5-inch versions reach 61.44TB. The reviewed unit is the 7.68TB SED E3.S model (KCD9DPJE7T68).

aktueller Firmenfall über Kioxia CD9P-R Review: Read-Intensive Gen5 Up to 61.44TB 0

Performance peaks at mid-range capacities: 7.68TB/15.36TB hit 14,800 MB/s sequential read and 450K 4K random write IOPS, while the 30.72TB flagship drops to 13,500 MB/s read / 270K write IOPS. The two smallest capacities use older Gen5 BiCS NAND, making 7.68TB the full-performance configuration.

Generational upgrades over CD8P-R 7.68TB: random write IOPS ×2.25 (200K → 450K), sequential read +23%, random read +30%. Active power rises slightly to 23W typical.
Target scenarios: hyperscale/cloud servers, OLTP read tiers, CDN, virtualization with read-heavy I/O. Key limitations: single-port design without dual-port array support, 1 DWPD endurance; write-intensive workloads suit mixed-use CD9P-V sibling. Standard enterprise features include partial OCP v2.5 compliance, PLP, end-to-end data protection, SIE instant erase / SED TCG security, 2.5M-hour MTTF (50°C) and a 5-year warranty.

Core E3.S Spec Highlights

  • Interface: PCIe 5.0 x4 NVMe 2.0; NAND: Gen8 BiCS TLC (7.68TB–30.72TB)
  • Peak performance (7.68TB): 14,800 MB/s seq read, 7,000 MB/s seq write, 2.6M 4K read IOPS, 450K 4K write IOPS
  • Power: 23W active / 5W idle; UBER <1 sector per 10¹⁷ bits read
  • Form factor: 7.5mm E3.S; max weight 110g; wide operating temperature & shock/vibration tolerance

Test Environment

Test platform: Dell PowerEdge R760 (2×Xeon Gold 6430, 128GB DDR5, Gen5 JBOF, NVIDIA L4, Ubuntu 22.04). Competitors: Pascari X200P, SanDisk SN861, Solidigm PS1010, Kingston DC3000ME, Micron 7600 Max, Micron 9550 Max / Pro. Benchmarks: DLIO AI checkpoint simulation, FIO sequential/random I/O, NVIDIA GDS GPU direct storage.

DLIO AI Checkpoint Test (LLAMA 3.1 405B, 8-GPU hybrid parallel, 1636GB checkpoints)

Across 18 test cycles, CD9P-R stabilized at ~572s per checkpoint pass, tightly clustered with mainstream Gen5 SSDs (553–590s). Pascari X200P lagged severely at 674.5s. Through checkpoint 12, it maintained steady 560–580s runtime with minimal latency fluctuation, matching Solidigm PS1010 and Micron 7600 Max for consistency, while Micron 9550 Max delivered slightly faster checkpoint times in later cycles.

FIO Benchmark Key Results

  1. 128K Sequential Write (QD16)

CD9P-R scored 6,912 MB/s with 289µs average latency, ranking near the bottom of the field, consistent with its read-focused 1 DWPD design. Micron 9550 Max led write throughput at 10,958 MB/s.
  2. 128K Sequential Read (QD64)

Top-tier performance at 14,236 MB/s, nearly tied with Pascari X200P; average read latency 561.7µs, limited only by PCIe Gen5 bandwidth.
  3. Random I/O Core Traits
  • 64K Random Read: Industry-leading low latency at shallow queue depths; peaks at 11–12 GB/s under high concurrency.
  • 4K Random Read: Standout low QD1 latency (~30µs, half most rivals); peak 2.165M IOPS, second-best overall.
  • All random write workloads: Mid-pack throughput and predictable latency, avoiding extreme spikes seen on Solidigm and Pascari drives.

GPU Direct Storage (GDS) Test

GDS bypasses CPU to enable direct GPU-storage data transfer, critical for AI training pipelines.
  • Sequential Read: Excellent multi-thread scaling; hits group-leading 6.2 GiB/s peak throughput at 1M block size.
  • Sequential Write: Best single-thread 1M write throughput (4.9 GiB/s) but fails to scale upward, ranking fifth among eight drives. Write latency remains stable without the severe throughput collapse observed on Solidigm PS1010 and Micron 9550 Max under heavy multi-thread writes.

Conclusion

Kioxia CD9P-R 7.68TB fully delivers on its read-intensive positioning. Its core strengths are top Gen5 sequential read bandwidth and class-leading low shallow-queue random read latency, paired with stable DLIO AI checkpoint and GDS performance.

Tradeoffs align with its 1 DWPD rating: write throughput and latency lag mixed-use competitors like Micron 9550 series; heavy write workloads require CD9P-V instead.
The full capacity lineup up to 61.44TB (2.5-inch) simplifies uniform qualification for read-heavy cloud fleets, AI data staging, CDN and virtualization. It is highly recommended for read-dominant enterprise environments prioritizing consistent low-latency read performance.
